HEALTHCARE / MATERNAL HEALTH FACILITY

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A Space for Care, Birth, and Community Healing

The Community of Hope Family Health & Birth Center is designed to support holistic, community-centered care—creating a safe, dignified environment for maternal health, wellness, and healing. Rooted in equity and accessibility, the project reimagines healthcare spaces as places of comfort, empowerment, and trust.

Serving families across Washington, DC, the center integrates clinical care with community support services, offering a continuum of care that prioritizes both physical and emotional well-being. The design reflects a commitment to addressing disparities in maternal health by creating spaces that feel welcoming, culturally responsive, and deeply human.

Where care begins with dignity. Where community supports healing.

THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT

Designing for Dignity and Wellness

Gensler’s design for the Community of Hope Family Health & Birth Center prioritizes patient-centered care through thoughtful spatial planning, calming materiality, and an emphasis on comfort and privacy. The layout balances clinical functionality with a welcoming, residential quality—helping to reduce stress and create a sense of ease for patients and families.

Natural light, warm finishes, and clear circulation pathways contribute to an environment that supports healing and connection. The design fosters a sense of trust and belonging, ensuring that care is not only delivered, but experienced with dignity and compassion.

Architecture that nurtures care, comfort, and community.

ARTIST INTERPRETATION

Wombs of Strengthh

“Wombs of Strength” is a powerful visual exploration of Black maternal resilience, care, and generational continuity. Through layered imagery and symbolic storytelling, the installation centers the strength, vulnerability, and sacredness of motherhood—honoring the lived experiences of Black women and families.

Drawing from themes of protection, ancestry, and healing, the artists create a space that reflects both the physical and emotional journey of birth. Organic forms, soft textures, and expressive figures work together to evoke a sense of grounding, safety, and connection—reinforcing the importance of culturally responsive care environments.

Honoring life.

Centering care.

Uplifting strength.
