Marquisha Powell will lead us on the tour of The Adams Education Campus, located within the Washington Heights historic district, which exemplifies the precise intervention and treatment of prominent features as well as the coordination with local officials and review boards needed to successfully modernize a historic building. Adams models a sustainable approach toward modernizing important cultural landmarks to meet contemporary styles of learning while still retaining relevance for future generations. These modernization efforts not only facilitate new connections to the outdoors, where learning is increasingly transitioning, but also to the neighborhood through shared community spaces and reimagined site amenities. Public art interventions implemented throughout the community engagement process can similarly promote awareness of the cultural context and revitalize outdated portions of existing structures.
