CULTURAL / PERFORMANCE SPACE

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A Legacy Reimagined for a New Generation

The Howard Theatre stands as one of Washington, DC’s most historic cultural landmarks—an enduring symbol of Black artistry, performance, and community. Since its opening in 1910, the theatre has hosted generations of legendary performers, shaping the cultural identity of the city and beyond.

The $29 million revitalization of the 30,390-square-foot venue reestablishes the theatre as a dynamic, multi-functional destination—supporting live performances, community events, and cultural programming. Through thoughtful design, the project reinforces the building’s legacy while ensuring its continued relevance as a modern performance space.

Today, the Howard Theatre serves as both a historic icon and an active cultural anchor within the Shaw neighborhood—supporting economic vitality while preserving its deep cultural significance.

Where history takes the stage. Where culture lives on.

THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT

Designing for Legacy and Performance

Michael Marshall Design’s revitalization of the Howard Theatre carefully balances historic preservation with modern performance needs—transforming the space into a fully operational, multi-level venue while maintaining its cultural integrity.

The two-story theatre, complete with a basement level, integrates a full-service restaurant and kitchen, expanding the building’s functionality beyond performance into a comprehensive cultural and hospitality experience. The interior design enhances the theatrical atmosphere through features such as a dome ceiling with multi-colored LED lighting, creating an immersive visual experience that responds to live performances.

Lightbox displays throughout the space honor legendary Black performers who have graced the stage, embedding storytelling directly into the architecture. Custom signage and contemporary design elements are thoughtfully woven into the preserved historic fabric—ensuring that the building evolves without losing its identity.

As a designated historic landmark, the project required navigating a complex entitlements process. MMD worked closely with the National Park Service, the Historic Preservation Office, and the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) to ensure that the design respected the building’s legacy while supporting its long-term sustainability.

Architecture as preservation—honoring legacy while supporting the future.

ARTIST INTERPRETATION

Echoes of the Stage

“Echoes of the Stage” transforms the legacy of the Howard Theatre into a vivid, layered visual experience—bringing together portraiture, color, and cultural symbolism to honor the artists who shaped its history.

Through bold, expressive paintings and carefully curated objects, the installation captures the individuality and presence of iconic performers while reflecting the energy of live performance. Each piece functions as both portrait and tribute, preserving not only likeness, but the spirit, influence, and cultural impact of those who took the stage.

The inclusion of personal artifacts and tactile elements extends the narrative beyond the visual—inviting viewers to engage with memory, identity, and the material culture surrounding performance. The work becomes an intimate reflection of legacy as something carried, worn, and remembered.

Rather than presenting history as distant, the installation brings it forward—alive, expressive, and deeply connected to the present moment.

The stage remembers.

The music lives on.

The legacy continues.

THE COLLABORATION

Where Architecture and Art Intersect

The collaboration between Michael Marshall Design and artists Antonio Moore and Kristen King transforms the Howard Theatre into a layered narrative of performance, identity, and cultural memory. Through the integration of architectural documentation and expressive artwork, the installation bridges the physical space of the theatre with the people and stories that define it.

Architectural drawings and historical imagery ground the installation in the theatre’s spatial and structural reality, while the vibrant portraits and objects bring forward the human experience of the space—highlighting the performers, audiences, and moments that give it meaning.

The juxtaposition of precise architectural representation with bold artistic expression reflects the dual nature of the Howard Theatre: both a historic structure and a living cultural institution. The installation makes visible the relationship between space and performance—showing how architecture supports, frames, and amplifies cultural expression.

Human interaction within the installation reinforces that this legacy is ongoing. The theatre is not just remembered—it continues to be activated through community, creativity, and presence.

A shared vision—where design, performance, and legacy converge.
