MATERNAL HEALTH / COMMUNITY CARE SPACE

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A Sanctuary for Birth, Healing, and Postpartum Care

Jamaa Birth Village is a community-centered space dedicated to supporting Black mothers and families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. Rooted in holistic wellness and cultural affirmation, the project reimagines maternal care environments as places of safety, dignity, and healing.

Designed to extend beyond traditional clinical settings, the space integrates care, education, and community support—creating a continuum that nurtures both physical and emotional well-being. Through intentional design, Jamaa Birth Village fosters an atmosphere of calm, trust, and connection, empowering families throughout their journey.

Where birth is honored. Where care is continuous. Where community sustains healing.

THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT

Designing for Care Beyond the Clinic

CannonDesign’s approach to Jamaa Birth Village centers on creating a space that feels more like a home than a healthcare facility. The design prioritizes comfort, privacy, and warmth—supporting the emotional and physical needs of mothers and families during one of life’s most transformative experiences.

Through the use of natural materials, soft lighting, and thoughtfully scaled spaces, the environment fosters a sense of calm and belonging. The layout encourages connection while also allowing for moments of rest and reflection, reinforcing the importance of culturally responsive and community-driven care.

Architecture that nurtures care, comfort, and community.

ARTIST INTERPRETATION

Sanctuary After Birthh

“Sanctuary After Birth” explores the emotional and physical transition into motherhood, focusing on rest, restoration, and care beyond delivery. Through soft textures, layered materials, and calming visual elements, the installation creates a gentle, immersive environment that reflects the postpartum experience.

The work emphasizes the importance of support systems, healing, and community—honoring the often unseen aspects of motherhood. By centering comfort, vulnerability, and strength, the installation transforms the space into a sanctuary where care extends beyond the clinical moment.

Rest is care.

Healing is essential.

Community is everything.

THE COLLABORATION

Where Architecture and Art Intersect

The collaboration between CannonDesign and artist Sonia Jones brings Jamaa Birth Village to life as a space that embodies care, healing, and cultural affirmation. Through the integration of architectural design and artistic expression, the project expands beyond function—creating an environment that supports the full journey of motherhood.

Together, the design and installation reflect a shared commitment to redefining maternal care spaces, ensuring they are not only supportive, but restorative and deeply human.

A shared vision—rooted in care, expressed through space.
